TRENTON – Senator Linda Greenstein’s bill to improve air quality in public schools has passed through the Senate Environment and Energy Committee. This important legislation aims to have the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conduct a thorough study of indoor air quality in schools.

The DEP will work alongside the Department of Education and the Rutgers Center for Green Building to gather information within a year of the bill becoming law. They will examine a variety of schools across the state, ensuring a mix of locations, educational levels, and ages of buildings.

“Childhood is a critical time for development. Exposure to air contaminants can lead to health issues, like asthma,” Senator Greenstein explained. “Since children spend a significant amount of time in schools, we must make sure the air they breathe is safe.”

The study will check for harmful substances, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and volatile organic compounds, among others. Once the study is complete, the DEP will provide guidelines for schools to help reduce or manage these indoor air pollutants.

The bill moved forward with a unanimous 4-0 vote, highlighting the commitment to creating healthier learning environments for our children.
