Harbaugh Calls Lamar’s Practice Miscommunication an ‘Honest Mistake’: What This Means for the Team

BALTIMORE — After the Ravens’ 30-16 win over the Chicago Bears, Coach John Harbaugh addressed a mix-up concerning Lamar Jackson’s injury report status. He called it “an honest mistake.”

Originally, the Ravens had listed Jackson as a full participant in Friday’s practice, but he’d only taken part in scout team drills. They later corrected his status to limited participation and ruled him out due to a hamstring injury. “Nobody’s trying to hide anything,” said Harbaugh. “There’s no advantage to be gained by this.”

Jackson was initially noted as limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. When his status changed to full participant on Friday, it led many to believe he’d be ready to play. However, Harbaugh admitted he wasn’t involved in setting the practice designations; that responsibility falls on athletic trainers and the PR team.

“The trainers thought his reps were typical for a full practice. But the rules don’t support that designation,” Harbaugh explained. “As soon as we realized the error, we fixed it.”

According to NFL rules, participation in scout team drills, no matter how many reps a player gets, doesn’t count towards a full participation designation if that player usually practices with the starters.

The Bears’ head coach, Ben Johnson, noted that they had prepared for Jackson but adjusted once they learned he wouldn’t be playing. “We were ready for the next guy,” he said.

Tyler Huntley stepped in for Jackson, completing 17 of 22 pass attempts for 186 yards and throwing a touchdown. He also ran for 53 yards, helping the Ravens snap a four-game losing streak.

Bears defensive tackle Grady Jarrett commented on the situation, saying he believed there was no ill intent behind the mix-up. “It’s just how the league goes,” he noted.

Bears safety Jaquan Brisker acknowledged that their game plan changed with Huntley under center, but ultimately, they still had to perform as a defense. “No excuses,” he said.

Looking ahead, Harbaugh expressed hope that Jackson would return to the lineup for Thursday’s matchup against the Dolphins in Miami.
