The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team faced a tough match against Notre Dame during the ITA Kick-Off on Sunday, losing 4-0. The Fighting Irish dominated, winning every doubles and singles match.
In singles, Esha Velaga was competing well at No. 1 when her match was abandoned at 4-4. Maya Urata also had a fight at No. 2, but her match was stopped at 0-3. Unfortunately, Lara Stojanovski, Liza Tkachenko, and Joleen Saw couldn’t secure a win, falling in straight sets.
In doubles, the pairs struggled as well. Esha Velaga and Joleen Saw were edged out 6-4 by Bianca Molnar and Sophia Holod from Notre Dame. The same score was seen with Lara Stojanovski and Sasha Morlagh against Akari Matsuno and Jessica Kovalcik.
Despite this loss, the Quakers are looking to regroup as they prepare to play Drexel on Saturday, January 31. This matchup at the Hecht Tennis Center offers a chance for them to bounce back and improve their standings.
Recent trends in women’s college tennis show a growing competitiveness among teams. According to the ITA, nearly 30% of matches this season have ended with teams winning by narrow margins, highlighting how close these encounters can be.
Experts suggest that small adjustments, both in training and strategy, can lead teams to significant improvements. Coach Michael Dowd emphasizes the importance of resilience: “Every loss is an opportunity to learn and grow.”
As the match against Drexel approaches, Quakers fans will be keenly watching for signs of progress and performance. The team spirit and hard work could turn things around, creating an exciting season ahead.
