A Harvard astrophysicist is stirring up excitement about a mysterious object in our solar system. Professor Avi Loeb, from the Galileo Project, believes the object, named 3I/ATLAS, might be more than just a comet.
Loeb points to its unusual brightness as a key clue. He suggests that it could be producing its own light, possibly from nuclear energy. This contrasts with NASA’s view that it’s simply a comet. In a recent Hubble Space Telescope photo, a bright area shone from the side of the object facing the sun.
“Comets usually have tails, pushed back by solar radiation. But this glow is in front of 3I/ATLAS,” Loeb stated. However, not all experts agree. Oxford astronomer Chris Lintott dismissed the idea that the object is anything artificial, labeling it “nonsense.”
Loeb admits that it’s likely 3I/ATLAS is a large comet, similar to 2I/Borisov, which traveled through our system in 2019. But he’s intrigued by its behavior. As it nears Earth in December, scientists hope to learn more about its true nature.
Currently, 3I/ATLAS is traveling on an unusual path, passing by Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. Loeb asserts that this trajectory suggests it might have been intentionally directed—an idea he finds compelling. He estimates the odds of a random space rock following such a path to be less than 0.005 percent.
Loeb has even discussed his theories with U.S. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna. She is pushing for investigations into unidentified phenomena, including possibly redirecting NASA’s Juno probe to gather data on 3I/ATLAS.
Despite the attention, some experts caution against jumping to conclusions. Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart argues that diverting spacecraft based on Loeb’s theories may be reckless. He believes that there’s not enough evidence to support claims of extraterrestrial intent.
