The ACT Government has introduced a draft Nature Conservation Strategy aimed at guiding how Canberra will protect and enhance its natural environment in the future.
This comprehensive plan focuses on conserving high-value natural areas across different land types. It aims to adapt to climate impacts like rising temperatures, prolonged bushfire seasons, and increased rainfall intensity.
“This new strategy will provide a clear vision for nature conservation in the ACT,” said Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water, Suzanne Orr. “It will help shape our laws and policies while supporting ecological recovery and enhancing partnerships.”
Orr highlighted that Canberra’s natural environment is a key asset. “Healthy ecosystems are vital for a thriving city. They help cool our neighborhoods, safeguard water supplies, support wildlife, and improve our overall living conditions,” she added.
The strategy aligns with the Nature Conservation Act 2014 and aims for a “nature-positive” future. This means protecting natural values and actively promoting recovery and regeneration.
To further this vision, a new Climate Change Strategy is in the works, along with the appointment of a Government Landscape Architect. Both efforts focus on protecting and improving Canberra’s natural landscape.
“Canberra’s changing climate directly impacts our unique environment,” Orr stated. “We need a solid strategy that not only protects biodiversity but also accommodates a growing city.”
Community involvement is crucial. By collaborating with Traditional Custodians, landholders, and local businesses, Canberra can protect its bushland, waterways, and wildlife for future generations. The current consultation phase invites everyone to contribute to shaping the strategy.
