Health Inspectors Expose Unsafe Food Practices at Kyoto Japanese Cuisine: What Diners Need to Know

This week, health inspections revealed that no restaurants, pools, or hotels failed within the Sept. 1–5 period. A score below 70 marks a failure, highlighting the overall compliance of local establishments.

The lowest score recorded was an 83, given to Kyoto Japanese Cuisine in Martinez. Inspectors noted several issues during the inspection. Cooked chicken was left cooling on the counter, which drew a three-point deduction. According to the report, “Foods must be cooled actively; either in an ice bath, with a cold wand, or in a cooler.”

Another three points were deducted for improper thawing practices, which included fish being thawed in its original packaging. If packaging instructs removal before thawing, the food should be taken out beforehand.

Food safety remained a concern as the inspector also observed raw eggs and sausage stored in a way that could contaminate ready-to-eat items. This careless storage earned another three-point penalty.

Cleanliness was another red flag, with dirty containers noted. Employees were even seen prepping food while wearing wrist accessories, which is against safety protocols. Additionally, the presence of live flies in the kitchen contributed to further score reductions.

Another establishment, Maryland Fried Chicken, scored an 88. Here too, improper washing of utensils resulted in a four-point deduction, alongside findings of outdated food items in their walk-in cooler.

Despite these findings, many local businesses excelled in health inspections. Several establishments achieved perfect scores of 100 throughout this inspection period:

• Willow Oak Village, 412 Sebastian Drive, Grovetown

In addition, businesses that received an “A” rating (between 90 and 99) included:
