DeSales University Baseball Loses Close Game Against Concordia
San Antonio, TX (March 10, 2025) – The DeSales University baseball team kicked off their 2025 spring trip with a nail-biting 15-14 loss to Concordia University.
Concordia struck first with a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout, leading 1-0. However, DeSales quickly answered back in the second inning, scoring three runs. A wild pitch brought in senior Owen Fischl, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Eric Wert, and a sac-fly from graduate student Travis Kerr, giving DeSales a 3-1 edge.
The Tornadoes weren’t done, though. They exploded for six runs in the second inning, taking back the lead at 7-3 with five hits that included a two-run home run.
DeSales battled back in the third. Fischl hit an RBI single, and first-year player Jacob Rivera added a sac-fly, closing the gap to 7-5. The Bulldogs ignited their offense in the fourth inning, scoring four more runs. Junior Colin Houck started the rally with an RBI fielder’s choice, and senior Justin DeStaso contributed a two-run single. Rivera capped the inning with another RBI single, putting DeSales up 9-7.
The scoring continued in the fifth, as DeSales added five more runs. Houck drew an RBI walk, while Zavorski, DeStaso, and Rivera each had singles that scored runs, extending the lead to 14-8.
Concordia fought back in the sixth with two-run double and an RBI groundout, cutting the lead to 14-11. They pulled even closer in the seventh with another double and an RBI single, trailing just 14-13.
The Tornadoes took the lead in the eighth inning with a two-run triple, finishing the game 15-14, despite DeSales’ attempts to rally back.
Junior pitcher Zach Rothermel had a solid outing, allowing only one run in three innings of relief while striking out three. Unfortunately, first-year player Kevin Eden was tagged with the loss after giving up the two runs in the eighth.
DeStaso shined at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a run. Rivera went 3-for-4, also contributing three RBIs, while Houck scored three times with two RBIs. Kerr, Fischl, and Wert all added three hits to the team’s effort.
Next up, DeSales will face Southwestern University, with the game scheduled for 8:00 PM on March 11.
