Game Recap: Panthers Dominate Wildcats in Season Opener
In the opening game of the season, Florida International University (FIU) overwhelmed Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) with a final score of 42-9. The game, played at Pitbull Stadium, started over an hour late due to weather delays.
B-CU kicked off strong, scoring first with a 35-yard field goal by Juan Dominguez. But FIU quickly took the lead with a 67-yard drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown plunge from Kejon Owens. They never looked back.
By halftime, FIU had a commanding 28-6 lead. Keyone Jenkins, FIU’s quarterback, played a crucial role, passing for 187 yards and rushing for two touchdowns. His performance was a highlight of the game.
The second half saw continued dominance from the Panthers. A fumble recovery at B-CU’s 12-yard line allowed Jenkins to add another rushing touchdown, pushing the score to 35-6. B-CU managed to score again, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
FIU’s running game was equally impressive, with Owens rushing for 71 yards and two touchdowns. The team’s defense, led by Johnny Chaney Jr. and Josiah Taylor, kept B-CU in check.
B-CU’s Timmy McClain threw for 164 yards, but struggled against a tough FIU defense. Despite the loss, Dominguez shone for B-CU, completing all three of his field goal attempts.
Next up, B-CU faces the University of Miami on September 6th at Hard Rock Stadium. Given the tough loss, they’ll be eager to bounce back.
