High School Hockey Player Triumphs Amid Tragedy
Colin Dorgan, a high school hockey player, recently scored the game-winning goal during a double-overtime match, taking his team to the state championship. The moment was particularly poignant as Colin wore a patch on his jersey honoring his mother, brother, and grandfather, who were killed in a tragic shooting last month at a Rhode Island ice rink.
“It was the greatest moment of my life,” Colin said after the game aired on WPRI-TV.
On February 16, Colin lost his mother, Rhonda, and brother, Aidan, during a shooting while playing. Tragically, his grandfather, Gerald, later succumbed to his injuries. The shooter, identified as Robert Dorgan, was reportedly targeting his family and died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
In the aftermath, Rhode Island suspended all high school sports for a week. But within that time, teams rallied around Colin. Blackstone Valley Schools, his team, returned to the ice with hearts stitched onto their jerseys, bearing the initials of the three lost family members.
Emerging from the shadows of tragedy, the team faced Portsmouth High School just weeks later. In a tense match on March 11, Colin scored a breakaway goal in double overtime, sealing a 3-2 victory. On March 18, Blackstone Valley will compete in the Division 2 boys hockey championship game.
The community’s resilience shines brightly. Several spectators heroically intervened during the shooting, helping contain the attacker while others fled, showcasing incredible bravery in a moment of chaos. Thankfully, additional injuries were prevented, but Colin’s family friend, Thomas Geruso, and his grandmother, Linda, sustained injuries.
This event has reignited discussions around safety in youth sports and community support for families affected by gun violence. Following the incident, a recent survey found that 78% of parents feel less secure about their children’s safety in public spaces, highlighting the need for increased awareness and action on this crucial topic.
As the championship game approaches, Colin’s journey serves as a reminder of strength and hope amidst adversity. The community continues to rally behind him, and many will be watching closely, not only for the game but to support a young man who has faced immeasurable loss with incredible courage.
