Beth Corbett from the Central Texas Food Bank notes that the shutdown caused many families to dip into savings or take on extra debt. “Financial disruptions don’t vanish overnight,” she says, emphasizing the lingering effects on families in need.
In states like Oklahoma and Texas, food insecurity is a serious issue. Corbett reports that some food pantries have seen a staggering 300% increase in visits since the shutdown. In Texas alone, around 270,000 people rely on SNAP, adding to the immense pressure on food banks.
Before the shutdown, the Central Texas Food Bank spent about $1.3 million a month on food. During the shutdown, that number jumped to $1 million a week. This spike in demand made it tough to find food and fundraise, as food banks nationwide faced similar challenges. They even had to buy items they typically wouldn’t, like milk and eggs, to help meet needs.
Eric Cooper, the president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, describes how the shutdown hit just as they were already dealing with increased demands from earlier in the year and recovery efforts from severe flooding. “We’re doing everything we can,” he says, noting the recent surge in donations and volunteers jumping from 2,000 to nearly 3,000.
Although they received more help, Cooper mentioned they had to adjust how much food they distribute. Instead of providing a week’s worth, they now offer enough for just three to five days. This reality paints a clearer picture of the ongoing challenges faced by food banks as they strive to support their communities during these trying times.
