How a Business Student Transformed Their Career by Earning an MBA Through a Unique University Partnership in India

KOKOMO, Ind. — Dhivya Balabascarin has an MBA in international business, but her journey is not what you might expect. Instead of stepping into an executive role, she has been a cashier at the Cougar Café at Indiana University Kokomo. Why? She’s working on her second MBA, this time in business analytics.

“This degree from IU Kokomo is so important to me,” she shared. Dhivya is part of a dual degree program with Pondicherry University in India. In 2022, leaders from both universities joined forces to give students a chance to study abroad.

Leaving her family behind to move to Indiana was a big step for her. “It was a culture shock,” she recalled. “I had to learn to face the world with courage. Getting an American degree has always been my dream, and my parents encouraged me to pursue this path. I’m proud to make them proud.”

Transitioning from the bustling streets of India to the quiet environment of Kokomo surprised her. “When I got here, everything felt so peaceful. In India, noise surrounds you everywhere. Here, it’s calm, and that’s a big change.”

Dhivya made the most of her time at IU Kokomo. She served as vice president of the international student association, which helped her connect with others. Her job at Rozzi’s Catering introduced her to many people and led to an exciting internship.

“As a cashier, I met lots of customers,” she explained. “The Rozzi team supported me in my marketing internship, and I’m really thankful for that. They are wonderful people.”

The support didn’t stop there. She found her professors and the alumni association to be incredible resources. “The faculty helped me grow, and the alumni network has been great for job hunting,” she said.

Dhivya also praised Chancellor Canada for his guidance. “He’s a strong leader, and he’s been a great mentor to me,” she added.

With graduation around the corner in December, Dhivya is eager to jumpstart her career in the U.S. She has experience as a marketing specialist and social media analyst, and she hopes to find a role similar to her past positions.

Although her parents can’t come for the Commencement ceremony on May 13, Dhivya is determined to bring them to the U.S. once she establishes her career. “They were worried about sending me here, but they believe in the value of this education. They see how hard I’m working,” she said. “My mom is so proud of me for earning my degree and living independently. I can finally support myself.”

Education truly is key at Indiana University Kokomo.
