The BIRTH Fund in Indianapolis has grown from 100 to 150 participants, supporting expectant mothers in 17 ZIP codes with high infant mortality rates. Launched in November 2025, this initiative aims to tackle the issue of maternal and infant health by providing cash assistance and vital resources.
Participants receive about $20,000 over three years, helping to ease financial burdens. This support comes at a crucial time; eligible ZIP codes report infant mortality rates over 200% higher than the national average, highlighting significant health disparities.
A study by The Women’s Fund of Central Indiana points out several barriers that lead to inequitable health outcomes. Challenges such as lack of transportation to appointments, cultural differences in understanding care, and financial stress can make it hard for families to prioritize health. These issues often create a vicious cycle, where families struggle to meet basic needs like housing and food while trying to ensure the health of mothers and infants.
The BIRTH Fund aims to break this cycle. By relieving some of the stress that comes with financial pressures, the program hopes to improve health outcomes for both mothers and their babies. Local leaders, such as Anita Lewis from the NAACP, see great potential in this program. She believes it will inspire other families to seek the help they need. “When people see others in their community accessing these services, they’re more likely to try them too,” Lewis said.
As of March 2026, the program’s expansion reflects a growing recognition of the need to address these disparities. It not only offers financial aid but also emphasizes mental and physical health support, creating a more holistic approach to maternal care.
