Recently, the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) in Ahmedabad celebrated the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. This day, known as Ambedkar Jayanti, honors his legacy of advocating for equality and social justice. Events were held across India, bringing together students, educators, and community members to reflect on his impact.
During the celebration, Professor K.C. Poria, Vice Chancellor of Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University, spoke about Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions. He emphasized Ambedkar’s belief in the power of education as a means of empowerment. According to him, the National Education Policy 2020 aligns with Ambedkar’s vision, pushing for tech-driven and skill-based education.
Education remains a crucial factor for social change. Recent reports from UNESCO indicate that those with basic education can earn up to 20% more than those without. This reaffirms Ambedkar’s view that education is a vital tool against poverty and inequality. In India, there’s a notable shift towards skill-based learning, especially through online platforms and vocational training in smaller towns.
Professor Poria also highlighted the relevance of Ambedkar’s ideals in today’s educational landscape. Many universities now incorporate values like equality and respect into their curriculum. Students are increasingly involved in outreach efforts, working directly with underprivileged communities.
Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director General of EDII, stressed that empowering the underprivileged is not just a duty; it’s an investment in the country’s future. Economic studies back this up. Research from the World Bank shows that countries focusing on inclusive growth see better long-term development. When more individuals enter the workforce, local businesses flourish, jobs increase, and community stability improves. India has seen progress through initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs and rural businesses.
Dr. Shukla said, “Inclusive growth means everyone has a fair chance to succeed.” Many inspiring stories of entrepreneurs from marginalized backgrounds are now gaining recognition, showing how access to resources can transform lives.
Closing the event, Dr. Satya Ranjan Acharya from EDII expressed that entrepreneurship is a powerful vehicle for uplifting marginalized communities. It promotes self-reliance and dignity. Research from Harvard Business School indicates that small businesses play a significant role in job creation worldwide. In India, micro and small enterprises, particularly in textiles and food, are essential to the economy. By starting their own businesses, individuals from underprivileged sections often create jobs for others in their communities.
Dr. Acharya noted that EDII is committed to building an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Their programs offer hands-on support for first-time entrepreneurs, including business planning and funding guidance.
