How East Texas Food Businesses are Innovating After the FDA’s Ban on Red Dye 3

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The FDA has announced a ban on red dye No. 3, which means it can no longer be used as an additive in foods, supplements, or medicines. Local food businesses in East Texas are already adapting to this change.

Yesenia Garcia, co-founder of Nuevo Leon Bakery, emphasized the importance of customer health. “If we need to change our ingredients because of the ban, we’re ready to do that,” she said. The bakery has avoided red dye, opting instead for a vibrant palette of yellow, green, and pink in their pastries.

Garcia also pointed out that natural sources like fruits and vegetables can be used for coloring. For example, beets provide a deep red color without artificial additives.

In Lufkin, the Atkinson Candy Company, a business with over 90 years of experience, is also ahead of the curve. They shared on their Facebook page that they removed artificial flavors and colors back in 2016, enhancing the taste and healthiness of their products.

Both the bakery and the candy company have not used red dye No. 3 in their goods. Food manufacturers have until January 2027 to eliminate the dye, while makers of ingested drugs have until January 2028 to comply with the new regulations.
