GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Grand Canyon Lopes faced a challenging day in the NCAA Tournament, battling through rain and tough competition from Cal Poly. Despite the weather, the Lopes demonstrated resilience and determination on the sand.
In their matchup, GCU pushed Cal Poly to the limit, taking several sets down to the wire. Though Cal Poly, ranked sixth, ultimately won, the experience revealed the Lopes’ spirit. With just two seniors on a ten-player roster, GCU showcased its potential on a national stage.
“We really stepped it up,” said senior Jessica Drake. Despite the loss, Jessica felt proud of her team and their fight. “It was so fun,” she added. The Lopes had previously struggled against the Mustangs earlier in the season but made significant improvements this time.
Head coach Abra Rummel noted how far the team has come. She praised GCU for competing with one of the best teams in the country. “We went toe-to-toe with them,” she remarked, highlighting the team’s growth since the beginning of the season.
In their last match, senior Katie Keefe teamed with junior Sarah Edler. They took the lead in their set and demonstrated strong teamwork, showcasing just how much GCU has progressed.
