Three food delivery drivers were victims of armed robberies in Michigan City last week. The police are asking for the community’s help in identifying the suspects.
Here’s what happened:
On April 28, around 7:15 PM, a driver reported being robbed in the 100 block of Phillips Avenue. The suspect was a shorter African American man, wearing eyeglasses and a gray zip-up hoodie. He displayed a black firearm and ran off with the delivery.
The next day, at the same time, another driver was robbed in the 600 block of East 10th Street. This suspect, also an African American man, had facial hair and wore a green hoodie. He displayed a similar firearm and fled with a delivery order.
On April 30, at 7:07 PM, a third robbery occurred in the same area. The suspect matched the earlier descriptions, being an African American male with facial hair, wearing a blue hoodie and eyeglasses. He too showed a firearm and left with food.
The Michigan City Police Department urges anyone who witnessed these events or has information, including videos, to reach out to Detective Patrick Lewis at (219) 874-3221, Extension 1008, or email plewis@emichigancity.com.
This wave of robberies highlights a troubling trend. Recent statistics reveal that crimes against delivery workers have risen nationwide. According to a 2021 survey by the National Delivery Association, nearly 3 in 10 delivery drivers reported feeling unsafe during their jobs.
As our lifestyles shift toward more food delivery services, it’s crucial to ensure that our communities are safe for all workers. Local authorities and residents can work together to combat this issue, fostering an environment of safety for drivers.
