### McKenzie Health System’s Unique Tours
McKenzie Health System recently hosted a tour for ninth and tenth graders from Sanilac County. This was part of the Thumb Community Health Partnership’s High School Pipeline Program, designed to spark interest in healthcare careers.
During their visit, students explored various departments, such as pharmacy and nursing. They took part in hands-on activities, making the experience interactive and engaging. “These tours show students the many career paths available in their community,” said Nina Barnett, a public relations representative at McKenzie.
This effort not only introduces young people to healthcare careers but also fosters a future workforce geared towards local needs.
### A Day in the Life at Trinity Health Muskegon
Trinity Health Muskegon recently hosted students from Muskegon High School and Spring Lake High School for an event called “A Day in the Life of an Injured Student.” Students followed the medical journey of an athlete hurt during a football game. They witnessed everything from emergency response to surgery.
Dr. Jerry Evans noted, “Many students don’t realize the range of careers available in healthcare.” At this event, they were introduced to around 40 different health professions, from nurses to radiology technicians.
This initiative is part of Trinity Health’s “Growing Our Own” program, which aims to motivate local students to consider careers in healthcare.
### Discover Covenant Program
Covenant HealthCare launched “Discover Covenant” in 2024. This summer program allows recent high school graduates to explore various hospital jobs. Participants rotate through different departments for hands-on experience.
One student shared, “Working in the nursing rotation lit a passion for helping people in me.” This program has already seen some students pursue further education or employment within the hospital.
### Hillsdale Hospital’s Nursing Scholarship
Hillsdale Hospital offers the Doris Whorley Nursing Scholarship. High school seniors can receive up to $10,000 per year for nursing studies. This initiative supports the need for nurses in the community and honors Doris Whorley, who dedicated nearly 58 years to the field.
### Fun Learning at Eaton Rapids Medical Center
Eaton Rapids Medical Center recently conducted a pirate-themed hospital tour for local second graders. Activities included visits to the emergency department and learning about hand hygiene. This initiative aims to make young children comfortable with medical environments while teaching healthy habits.
### MI Hospital Careers Campaign
In June 2023, the MHA launched the MI Hospital Careers campaign, aimed at high school and college students interested in healthcare. This campaign encourages exploration of healthcare careers across Michigan, connecting students with opportunities in the field.
