Detroit’s immigrant business community is facing tough times. Owners are feeling the impact of recent executive orders from the White House.
Araceli Hernandez runs Florbella Salon in Southwest Detroit. She explains that her salon thrives on serving the local community. “We decided to stay open to support our community,” she says.
However, with recent calls to increase immigration enforcement, Hernandez has noticed a sharp decline in customers. Her usually bustling salon is quieter. “I’m worried about what’s next for my business,” she admits. “We might have to cut hours or even close.”
Many of her customers are undocumented, and the current uncertainty is keeping them away. “People are holding back, waiting to see how things unfold,” Hernandez explains.
Laura Chavez, head of the Southwest Detroit Business Association, reports that sales dropped quickly in the community. Business owners are trying to adapt, similar to how they did during the pandemic. “They’re figuring out how to keep serving essential needs while ensuring safety,” she says.
Hernandez agrees, stating, “We are a vital part of the local economy. We feel connected to this place and want to support it.” However, Chavez worries that the fear in the community might lead to lasting damage. “I’m not sure everyone realizes how serious this situation is for our diverse and vibrant neighborhood,” she says.
