NASA is making great strides in technology and research as it aims to maintain a presence on the Moon. Excitingly, some of the innovations aimed for lunar missions are finding uses right here on Earth. For instance, in Spinoff 2025, there’s a company that developed 3D printing technology for building on the Moon. Now, they’re using that same tech to create large structures on our planet. Another group is exploring how to construct lunar buildings using fungus. They now sell specially grown mushrooms and plan to apply this technique for housing here on Earth.
Spinoffs are all about turning advanced technology into useful products that benefit everyone. Highlights from Spinoff 2025 include using artificial intelligence first designed for Mars rovers to enhance quality control on factory assembly lines. There are also innovations in origami, inspired by mathematics, that are being used in lasers and optical computing. Additionally, some companies are focusing on hydrogen-based energy, building on NASA’s long history of using liquid hydrogen for rocket fuel.
Dan Lockney, a NASA Technology Transfer executive, shared, “It’s tough to predict how space tech will be applied in business, but I’m sure NASA’s technology will keep evolving and benefiting the economy.”
