On November 30, Pocheon City officials met with Kim Sung-hwan, the Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment, to discuss urgent water supply challenges and seek government help.
A key issue raised was the Naechon Water Intake and Purification Plant. Despite the area transitioning to a regional water supply system, this facility remains a significant barrier to local development. Pocheon City asked the ministry to take action to decommission this outdated infrastructure.
The city also highlighted the importance of national funding for a water supply stabilization project. This includes building the Seondan Reservoir, costing around 20 billion won, and upgrading the water transmission pipeline between Gunnae and Ildong Reservoirs, which is estimated at 33.4 billion won. Together, these projects aim to create a reliable water supply infrastructure that supports the city’s growth.
Officials believe that progressing on both the decommissioning of the Naechon facility and the stabilization project will offer multiple benefits. These include improving the local environment and providing a secure water supply even during emergencies. Enhanced facilities will also promise better water quality and quantity.
Moreover, the upgrades in the Soheul-Seondan and Gunnae-Ildong areas will enhance the city’s resilience against climate crises and disasters, contributing to the safety and well-being of residents.
Mayor Baek Younghyun underscored the shared responsibility of providing clean and stable water, highlighting a collaborative approach with both the central government and Gyeonggi Province to modernize the water supply system.
Recent statistics underscore the urgency of these projects. According to a survey by the Korean Ministry of Environment, nearly 40% of residents express concerns over water quality and availability. Addressing these issues can significantly improve public trust and quality of life in the region.
As communities worldwide face similar water supply challenges, Pocheon’s proactive approach may serve as a model for how cities can effectively collaborate with government bodies to ensure vital resources for their citizens.
