How Tariffs and Inflation Are Driving Increased Demand at Arkansas Food Pantries

Arkansas is facing a tough time with food insecurity. The state has the highest rate of food insecurity in the U.S., and rising prices are pushing more families to seek help from food pantries.

Chris Wyman, Executive Director of Potluck Food Rescue, shared that many families are struggling because their paychecks aren’t increasing fast enough to match inflation. New tariffs are making it harder for people to afford basic necessities like food. “It’s frustrating; people are having a hard time, and much of the food ends up going to waste because families can’t buy it,” he explained.

Potluck Food Rescue collects food from various sources, like restaurants and grocery stores, and distributes it to pantries that serve local communities. Wyman mentioned that their partnerships have grown from 62 to over 100 in just eight months, showing a rising need for assistance.

Experts say that this issue affects not just families but also suppliers and distributors. Wyman pointed out that restaurants will feel the squeeze as costs rise. “It’s going to impact everyone,” he said, noting that even large retailers like Walmart will be affected, as they too buy wholesale.

Despite these challenges, Potluck Food Rescue remains dedicated to its mission. Wyman emphasizes that helping those in need is not about politics; it’s a moral obligation to ensure everyone has enough to eat. He voiced his disappointment at the situation, stressing that no one should have to worry about their next meal.
