How Technology-Made Mobile Solutions Empower Jones County Firefighters to Stay On Scene Longer

From Jones County Fire Council Public Information Office

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – Thanks to new technology, Jones County firefighters can now stay longer at emergency scenes. A mobile breathing apparatus refill station makes this possible.

The Sharon Volunteer Fire Department has received a special air-and-light trailer. This trailer is equipped with a mobile cascade system that refills self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs) that firefighters wear during calls.

Imagine a machine that fills scuba tanks or the device used to refill gas for a grill. This is similar, but for firefighters.

Called the “Delta Fire & Safety Trailer,” this unit has a powerful compressor system that can fill four SCBA bottles at once, providing 6,000 pounds of pressure per square inch.

The American Air Works system allows for as many SCBAs to be refilled as needed on-site. In the past, firefighters had to leave the emergency scene to refill their equipment at a nearby firehouse, which could delay their response.

Now, they can refill SCBAs right at the scene, keeping them ready for action without delay.

Additionally, the trailer has lights for nighttime operations and climate control features for firefighter recovery.

Training for this new equipment began on Thursday. The Sharon VFD will maintain the trailer, but it will be available across Jones County for large events.

Funding for the trailer came from a grant provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
