The Soorma Hockey Club will meet the Odisha Warriors in the final of the Women’s Hockey India League 2024-25 on Sunday. This exciting match will take place at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, starting at 6:00 PM IST.
This is a special moment as the women are competing in the HIL for the very first time, after seven years since the last league was held. Previously, five editions of the HIL focused on men’s teams, but now women athletes get their chance to shine.
The tournament followed a league format where each team played against the others twice. Soorma Hockey Club finished on top with 13 points, while Odisha Warriors grabbed second place with 11 points. Unfortunately, the Rarh Bengal Tigers and Delhi SG Pipers did not make it to the final, finishing with 7 and 5 points, respectively.
These two teams have already clashed twice in the tournament. Soorma Hockey Club won the first match 2-1, with goals from Hina Bano and Sonam. Odisha’s Freeke Moes managed to score, but it wasn’t enough. Their second encounter ended in a goalless draw, but Odisha Warriors won in the shoot-out, securing a bonus point.
Odisha Warriors will be relying on key player Yibbi Jansen, who was named the women’s Player of the Year for 2024. She shares the title of top-scorer with Soorma Hockey Club’s Charlotte Englebert, as both have netted five goals during the league.
For those interested, the men’s Hockey India League final is scheduled for February 1 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.
Fans can catch the Women’s Hockey India League final live on platforms like Waves and SonyLIV. The match will also be broadcast on several channels, including DD Sports and various Sony Ten channels in India.
