A little over a decade ago, I wrote a book called This Changes Everything, highlighting the clash between capitalism and the climate crisis. Initially, it seemed like we were making progress. Activists rallied to keep global warming below 1.5°C, and many countries, along with big corporations, announced plans to cut emissions.
But then things took a turn. In his first 100 days back in office, Trump rolled back over 140 environmental regulations and pushed for more fossil fuel usage. This opened the doors for banks and corporations previously touting green ambitions. They shifted focus, investing heavily in fossil fuels once more.
Misinformation about climate change has exploded, particularly from far-right politicians, complicating the fight for the planet. A study even suggests that this misinformation could turn a crisis into a full-blown catastrophe.
One significant move came from the Guardian, which in 2020 became the first major news outlet to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies. This decision reflects a commitment to providing independent, fact-based journalism in a time when corporate pressures are high.
Their mission is crucial. With facts and hope, we can fight against the overwhelming influence of wealth and power on environmental issues. The Guardian keeps us informed about the challenges we face and the actions we can take. Independent journalism is more important than ever, relying mainly on support from engaged readers.
Interestingly, a recent survey showed that 73% of people believe more media coverage on climate change would encourage action. This reinforces the need for outlets like the Guardian that focus on the facts and inspire hope.
In summary, while challenges abound, staying informed and engaged makes a difference in our fight against the climate crisis.
