Cinnabon Swirl has made its debut in Hillsboro, Oregon. This spot is nestled between a Jamba Juice and a Shake Shack and is part of the new Reed’s Crossing housing development.
Cinnabon Swirl is a new collaboration between Cinnabon and Carvel, the ice cream brand. GoTo Foods owns both companies, and they plan to open 30 Cinnabon Swirls across the U.S. by the end of this year. Cinnabon’s executive chef, Jennifer Holwill, explains that mixing ice cream with cinnamon rolls is a natural fit for both brands.
If you loved the smell of fresh Cinnabon rolls wafting through the mall, this place might catch your interest. They bake cinnamon rolls fresh every hour. As soon as they come out of the oven, they’re covered in frosting, melting and dripping off each roll.
One highlight on the menu is the Cinnabon Swirl Sundae, where a warm cinnamon roll is topped with soft serve ice cream. You can choose from vanilla, chocolate, cold brew, or birthday cake flavors, along with a syrup to complete your treat. For something different, there’s the “Bonini.” This is a cinnamon roll sliced in half and packed with a special vanilla ice cream. It gets pressed in a waffle iron until it’s toasted on the outside and gooey inside—a calorie bomb at 1,000 calories.
During my visit, I decided to try the Bonini. It was a splattered mess of ice cream and cinnamon roll. My brother joked it looked like a brain! The roll was sticky, making it tricky to hold. It felt like trying to eat an overloaded burger.
The Bonini was tasty but a bit too sweet for my liking. The soft serve flavors, however, were delightful. The birthday cake and cold brew options reminded me of simpler times—like childhood birthday parties with cake and frosting.
Cinnabon Swirl is not for the pastry snobs who seek perfection. If you’re the type who waits in line for artisanal pastries, this place might not be for you. Yet, it fits well in the suburban setting. During my visit, the place was buzzing with families and teens, all eager for sundaes and cinnamon rolls.
This venture seems positioned perfectly for today’s market, blending nostalgia with comfort food. It reflects a trend where consumers look for affordable, sugary indulgences as a treat, especially during uncertain economic times.
As dessert trends evolve, Cinnabon Swirl taps into familiar flavors while catering to our cravings for comforting, sweet treats. It’s a snapshot of where American dessert culture might head next: a mix of quick satisfaction and nostalgic flavors in a laid-back setting.
