NORMAL, Ill. – Excitement is buzzing in Normal, as the Illinois State football team makes history by reaching the FCS National Championship game for only the second time. On January 5, they’ll face No. 2 Montana State in Nashville. To support this leap in competitiveness, the program just received a generous $2.5 million donation from an anonymous former quarterback.
“We deeply appreciate this gift,” said Dr. Jeri Beggs, ISU Director of Athletics. “It reflects confidence in our athletics and adds fuel to our growth.” This contribution is not just substantial; it’s the largest for the football program in ISU history. The Redbirds’ journey to the championship has been remarkable, as they’ve knocked out top teams like North Dakota State, proving they can compete at the highest levels.
In 2025 alone, the Redbirds have achieved a staggering nine consecutive road victories against FCS opponents, showcasing their strength and resilience. This run establishes them as the national leaders in road victories and helps maintain the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s proud streak of having a representative in the championship for 15 years.
Paul Kabbes, ISU Deputy Director of Athletics, highlighted the significance of alumni investment. “It’s incredible to see former players give back. This donor’s love for the Redbirds shines through. It allows us to support Coach Spack and the team in elevating our standards,” he said.
Past investments, like the Hancock Stadium renovations in 2013, led to multiple playoff appearances in subsequent years, highlighting a positive trend for the program. Recently, opening the OSF HealthCare Athletics Training Center in 2023 helped set the stage for this latest championship run.
Coach Brock Spack emphasized the transformative nature of such support. “This commitment is vital for our future success. It lets us attract top talent and stay relevant nationally,” he said. Since joining as head coach in 2009, Spack has nurtured relationships with former players, welcoming them back for events like reunions, enhancing the program’s community spirit.
The team’s recent achievements have even encouraged alumni to support them in tangible ways, such as purchasing new Nike winter gear. The unity within the Redbird family is palpable, and it’s clear that the support of former players is crucial in propelling the team forward.
