Millions of Thermos food jars and bottles are being recalled due to a serious safety issue. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that the Thermos Stainless King Food Jars and Sportsman Bottles could unexpectedly eject their stoppers when opened. This includes model numbers SK3000, SK3020, and SK3010, all made before July 2023.
The problem arises because these stoppers lack a pressure relief feature. If food or liquids are stored for too long, the pressure buildup can cause the stopper to pop off forcefully. About 8.2 million products are affected by this recall.
Reports indicate that 27 incidents have occurred, with some individuals sustaining cuts that required medical attention. Alarmingly, three people experienced permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye by a flying stopper.
The bottles were sold nationwide from 2008 to 2024, usually priced around $30.
If you own one of these products, you can contact Thermos for a free replacement stopper or bottle, depending on the model. For SK3000 and SK3020 jars, dispose of the faulty stopper, take a photo, and send it to Thermos. For SK3010 bottles, you can return them using a prepaid shipping label.
This incident raises safety concerns similar to other product recalls in recent years. For example, in 2020, about 200,000 pressure cookers were recalled due to a risk of explosion. Such recalls emphasize the importance of consumer awareness regarding product safety.
