Kelli Makowski has decided to step down as head coach of the Gannon University Competitive Cheer and Dance program. She made this announcement on Friday, expressing her pride in coaching the team. “I am incredibly proud and grateful for the time I’ve spent with these athletes,” Makowski said. “They’ve taught me more than I could have ever expected.”
Makowski became head coach on August 1, 2024, after serving as an assistant from 2021-2024. As a former student-athlete in the program from 2015 to 2017, she played a big role in the Golden Knights’ success.
In her first season leading the team, Gannon achieved multiple first-place finishes at important competitions, including the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships. They earned third-place finishes in Team Performance Dance, Game Day Cheer, and Hip Hop.
In 2026, the Golden Knights continued to shine, securing firsts at events like the Spirit Against Cancer Cheer & Dance Competition and the Upstate Collegiate Championship. At the NCA & NDA Collegiate Nationals, they set a record, finishing second in the Game Day Division II finals and marking the program’s best result ever.
Under her guidance, the program also excelled in fundraising for Make-A-Wish, raising $3,961 during the 2025-26 academic year. This achievement underscored their commitment to community service, a value Makowski championed.
“Kelli has been a vital part of our program since 2014—as a student-athlete, assistant coach, and head coach,” said Gannon Director of Athletics Meghan Morphy. “Her leadership has taken the program to new heights.”
As we look forward, Gannon is beginning a search for the next head coach of the Competitive Cheer and Dance team. This transition opens the door for new leadership while building on the strong foundation Makowski has laid.
Recent trends show a growing interest in cheerleading, with many universities expanding their programs and competitive cheer becoming a recognized sport in various regions. This rise reflects the dedication of athletes and coaches alike, as they strive for excellence on and off the mat.
