The Mackinac Bridge in Upper Michigan has faced multiple closures recently due to falling ice, forcing Feeding America West Michigan to postpone food distributions in the area. Three distribution trucks had to return to their base in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids, which is troubling for many.

Ken Estelle, President and CEO of Feeding America West Michigan, expressed concern but noted that such closures, while unfortunate, don’t happen often. With the first of April usually being a stable time, these sudden changes have surprised the community. He urges people to stay informed by checking their website for updates. They can use the “Find Food” feature to locate food distribution events by entering their zip code or county.
One notable rescheduling occurred at Munising Wesleyan Church, which shifted its food distribution to next Wednesday. Bill Brutto, Head Administrator at the Salvation Army of Marquette County, remains committed to serving the community despite these challenges. He highlighted the increasing demand for food assistance, noting a 15% rise in their service numbers this year.
Interestingly, discussions on social media suggested that budget cuts led to these cancellations. Brutto clarified that this was not the case. He emphasized that the roadblocks were solely due to weather conditions, not federal funding issues.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, additional closures may continue in the upcoming days as weather conditions evolve. Keeping an eye on these updates is crucial for anyone relying on food assistance during this time.
