Important Update: Indian Visa Applications Halted Indefinitely in Chittagong, Bangladesh – What You Need to Know

Tensions Rise as India Suspends Visa Operations in Bangladesh

India has halted visa services at its Visa Application Centre in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This decision comes after the death of a prominent youth leader, Sharif Osman Hadi, which has stirred unrest in the country.

Hadi was known for leading student protests that resulted in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government last year. He had been actively campaigning for the upcoming elections on February 12 when he was shot in the head by masked gunmen on December 12. After being treated in Singapore, he passed away on December 14.

His death ignited widespread anger, leading to attacks and vandalism across Bangladesh, including incidents at the Indian High Commission in Chattogram. Consequently, the Indian Visa Application Centre announced the indefinite suspension of visa services in the city.

In a statement, the Centre mentioned that all visa-related services would remain closed until further notice, with plans to reassess the security situation before reopening. Security measures have also been tightened at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Sylhet, aiming to prevent any further violence.

During Hadi’s funeral on Saturday, attended by tens of thousands, mourners expressed their anger with chants targeting India. They vowed that Hadi’s sacrifice would not be forgotten, emphasizing the charged atmosphere surrounding his death.

According to recent surveys, incidents of political violence in Bangladesh have increased in the past year, reflecting deep-seated frustrations. With elections on the horizon, analysts warn that unrest could escalate further.

As the situation develops, the safety of foreign nationals and diplomatic missions remains a key concern. For ongoing updates, one may refer to The Dhaka Tribune for the latest news on the political landscape in Bangladesh.

This situation highlights the intricate relationship between political movements and international relations in the region. As tensions fluctuate, staying informed is more important than ever.
