Urgent Update: Indian Visa Applications Halted Indefinitely in Chittagong, Bangladesh – What You Need to Know

Dhaka: India has suspended visa operations at the Indian Visa Application Centre in Chittagong, Bangladesh. This decision follows heightened tensions after the tragic death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a notable youth leader and activist.

Hadi was influential in last year’s student-led protests that resulted in the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. He was shot in the head on December 12 during an election campaign in Dhaka. After being treated in Singapore, he passed away on December 14. His death sparked protests and violence across Bangladesh, including an attack on the residence of the Assistant Indian High Commissioner.

The suspension of visa services was confirmed by the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) on December 21, and it will remain closed until further notice. A review of the security situation will determine when operations can recommence. Security measures have been intensified at the Indian Assistant High Commission office and the visa centre in Sylhet as well.

Following Hadi’s funeral, which drew tens of thousands of mourners, demonstrators chanted slogans against India. This shows the deep emotions tied to Hadi’s death and the political climate in Bangladesh. The public’s response reflects a broader sentiment among the youth, who are increasingly vocal about their political beliefs and frustrations with the government.

Experts in political science note that the incident highlights a crucial moment for Bangladesh, where tensions between activists and the government remain high. The political landscape could shift as youth movements gain momentum, potentially altering the country’s future. In 2022, a survey by the Bangladesh Youth Development Institute revealed that 63% of young people felt the government was out of touch with their needs. Hadi’s death may serve as a catalyst for increased political engagement among the younger population.

The situation remains fluid, and many are watching closely to see how it unfolds. The next steps for both the Bangladesh government and Indian diplomatic missions will be critical in maintaining regional stability and addressing the fears and hopes of the people.
