New Delhi: India and the United States are on the verge of finalizing a major defense deal. This agreement, valued at over $1 billion, will see the purchase of 113 engines for 97 LCA Mark 1A Tejas fighter jets.
Recently, India cleared a deal worth ₹62,000 crore for 97 additional LCA Mark 1A fighter aircraft. Now, they are set to sign with GE, the American firm, to supply 113 more GE-404 engines for these indigenous aircraft.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has already secured a deal for 99 GE-404 engines for the initial 83 LCA Mark 1A jets ordered by the Indian Air Force. This new agreement adds to that supply. Officials expect the negotiations to wrap up by September.
This deal will help HAL meet its total requirement for 212 GE-404 engines, ensuring a smooth and timely delivery schedule for aircraft. HAL aims to roll out the first 83 jets by the end of 2029-30 and the next batch by 2033-34.
Moving forward, GE plans to supply two engines each month to fulfill its commitments. Additionally, HAL is negotiating to purchase GE-414 engines, which includes an 80% transfer of technology. India needs 200 GE-414 engines for its LCA Mark 2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) projects. This deal, worth around $1.5 billion, is anticipated to be finalized soon.
The need for these engines is particularly pressing as India looks to replace its aging fleet of MiG-21s, which are being phased out. The indigenous fighter jet program is supported by the Defence Ministry and aims to bolster local manufacturing, benefitting small and medium enterprises in the defense sector.
India is also developing its own fighter aircraft engine, collaborating with French firm Safran. The goal is to achieve self-reliance in defense, while also acquiring technologies from various global sources to enhance its capabilities.
This focus on indigenization not only strengthens national security but also positions India as a competitive player in the global defense market. As the country navigates these pivotal agreements, it set its sights on technological advancement and strategic partnerships.
