On January 28, 2025, India rejected claims made in a Canadian commission’s report about foreign interference in Canada’s elections. The report suggested that some foreign governments, including India, were meddling in the electoral process.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India didn’t hold back in its response, labeling the report’s claims as “insinuations.” They emphasized that it is Canada that has been interfering in India’s affairs rather than the other way around. The MEA commented, “This interference has also fostered illegal migration and organized crime.”
According to reports, there were allegations that India’s government had used proxy agents to secretly support certain candidates in Canadian elections. This was part of a broader investigation led by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue, who was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September 2023 to look into these foreign meddling allegations.
Alongside India, the commission also investigated potential interference by countries like China and Russia. In June 2023, another report highlighted that some Canadian parliamentarians were aware of or indirectly involved in these foreign interventions.
This ongoing dialogue about foreign influence reflects growing tensions in international relations and the complexities of global politics.
