New Delhi:
India is creating its own large language model through a public-private partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the AI Action Summit in Paris. This approach aims to pool resources for startups and researchers to enhance their AI capabilities.
PM Modi highlighted India’s focus on its diverse population while developing this model. He stated that resources, like computing power, will be made accessible at affordable rates. “India is ready to share its experience to ensure that AI benefits everyone,” he said.
At the summit, which he co-chaired with French President Emmanuel Macron, Modi reminded attendees that while we embrace AI, machines can never surpass human judgement and responsibility. “We are at the beginning of a new AI era that will define the future. It’s essential that we humans take charge of our destiny,” he added.
He also emphasized India’s digital public infrastructure, citing successful initiatives like the UPI network that serves over a billion people. “We’ve created this infrastructure at a low cost, focusing on open access and a wide range of applications to help modernize our economy and improve governance,” Modi explained.
The information gathered from these projects underpins India’s National AI Mission. During its G20 presidency, India built a consensus on AI issues, leading in the adoption of technology and solutions for data privacy. Modi noted that India is developing AI applications aimed at public good and boasts one of the largest talent pools in this field.
While in France, PM Modi plans to visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a pivotal international effort in nuclear fusion research. He will also honor the memory of Indian soldiers at the Mazargues War Cemetery.
Following his time in France, he will head to the United States for a two-day visit at the invitation of President Donald Trump.
