Indiana’s Summer Food Funds for Kids: Why the State is Leaving Hungry Families Behind

Indiana’s recent decision to cut its summer grocery assistance program has sparked concern among families and advocates. This program previously helped around 669,000 children by providing $120 per child when schools were closed. The cancellation means families may now face greater food insecurity during the summer months.

Kate Howe, executive director of the Indy Hunger Network, highlighted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture offers a program called SUN Bucks to help during the summer. She expressed confusion over Indiana’s choice to withdraw, noting that the program was cost-effective compared to many others and largely funded by the federal government.

The SUN Bucks program allowed families to shop for groceries while also accessing free summer meals. With this option eliminated, many families have no choice but to rely on meal sites, which can be far apart. Howe pointed out that in some areas, children may need to walk up to 15 miles just to access a meal, and dietary restrictions make the limited food choices problematic.

The rise in food insecurity isn’t just affecting Indiana. In Oregon, for example, one in six children struggle to get enough food, and local food bank visits increased by over 30% last year. These statistics reflect a broader national trend: as many families face tough economic choices, the need for food assistance has never been more critical.

Advocates stress that addressing hunger is a policy decision, and lawmakers need to prioritize food access for all children. They argue that helping families put food on their tables not only supports individual households but also strengthens local economies.

The recent cuts in Indiana and other states could have lasting effects on children and families. Programs like SUN Bucks and similar initiatives need support to ensure children don’t suffer from hunger, especially during summer breaks when school meals are unavailable.
