India’s Chip Revolution: Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils Plans for Domestic AI Model Production in 2023

India is charting an exciting path in technology, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and electronics manufacturing. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared some promising updates at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2025 in Delhi.

He highlighted that India aims to create its own AI model and boost electronics production. “Countries like South Korea and Vietnam started from scratch, much like us. We’re now moving forward in this crucial phase,” Vaishnaw explained. Notably, the electronics sector has expanded impressively, growing at 17% annually and exports soaring by 20% over the past five years, even during the pandemic.

Employment in electronics is also on the rise, now providing jobs to 2.5 million people, including a significant number of women. This shift presents a great opportunity for economic growth and gender inclusion.

When asked about the potential collaboration with Chinese phone brands like Vivo and Oppo, Vaishnaw affirmed that any company since the goal is to foster fast growth in India. “Companies are welcome here, and many look for joint ventures,” he added.

On the topic of AI, the minister expressed optimism. He noted that India has the computing power and talent to compete globally. “This is just the beginning of the AI boom. We’re not late; we’re right in the race, ready to leverage this new technology,” he remarked.

However, Vaishnaw stressed the need for caution with AI. Managing biases is critical, as they can lead to negative outcomes. He also announced that India will begin producing chips this year, with production facilities currently in development.

In a related issue, tech company X, formerly known as Twitter, recently challenged the Indian government’s content-blocking law in court. Vaishnaw responded to this by stating that it’s not uncommon for social media platforms to dispute government regulations: “Platforms must comply with Indian laws.”

Lastly, major changes are on the horizon for Indian Railways. Vaishnaw laid out three key improvements: enhancing safety to reduce rail accidents by 80%, increasing railway capacity, and introducing advanced trains like Vande Bharat and upcoming Bullet trains. He emphasized the government’s dedication to providing affordable transport, stating that India’s railway system is one of the most cost-effective globally.

As India continues to advance in these fields, there’s a palpable sense of excitement about the impact on jobs, technology, and everyday life for its citizens.
