Lahore: There was a surprising mix-up during the national anthems before the big ICC Champions Trophy match between Australia and England at Gaddafi Stadium. Instead of playing “Advance Australia Fair,” India’s anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” was heard for a brief moment.
Before this error, England’s anthem, “God Save The King,” was performed. Everyone expected “Advance Australia Fair” to follow, but for two seconds, the Indian anthem played instead. This blunder didn’t go unnoticed, and cricket fans quickly took to social media to share their amusement over the slip-up.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) will likely have to address this incident and discuss any actions that might be taken in response.
As for the match, Australia’s captain, Steve Smith, won the toss and chose to bowl first. Both teams came into this game after tough losses in their recent ODI series. England lost to India 3-0, while Australia dropped both matches against Sri Lanka in Colombo, a team not competing in this tournament.
In this tournament’s Group B, England and Australia are looking for at least two wins to secure their spots in the semifinals. They must face strong competition from South Africa and Afghanistan in their group. These two teams last battled in an ODI series in England last year, where Australia triumphed 3-2.
