DHAKA: Bangladesh is responding to India’s comments about the demolition of the historic Dhanmondi 32 house, once belonging to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Bangladeshi government has called these remarks “unexpected and undesirable.” Foreign ministry spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam emphasized that Bangladesh respects the sovereignty of other nations and expects the same in return.
Earlier, India expressed its disappointment over the destruction of the Dhanmondi 32 residence. India’s foreign ministry spokesman, Randhir Jaiswal, described the incident as “regrettable.” He highlighted the importance of this site, stating it symbolizes Bangladesh’s struggle for freedom against oppression.
The interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, labeled the demolition as unfortunate and suggested it was triggered by “provocative remarks” from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, made while visiting India. They urged India to prevent further comments that could destabilize their country.
A France-based human rights organization, JMBF, also condemned the attacks, calling them an affront to the democratic values of Bangladesh.
