R.N. Ravi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and chairman of the Auroville Foundation, recently shared insights on India’s journey since its Republic was formed. Speaking at a seminar titled “75 years of the Indian Republic: Milestones, Challenges and Future Horizons,” he contrasted past struggles with today’s achievements.
For decades, India faced significant turmoil. Regions like Jammu and Kashmir experienced continuous conflict, and Maoist groups operated in around 200 districts. Each year, thousands of citizens and security personnel lost their lives to violence. Ravi noted that after 2014, much has changed. The Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir have seen significant improvements in peace, local economies, infrastructure, and tourism. The Maoist movement has dwindled, with only a handful of groups remaining.
Ravi emphasized that India’s past leadership often reacted passively during crises. He highlighted the aftermath of the first Indo-Pak war, where appeals for mediation led to territorial disputes that persist today. He also pointed to concessions made to China and Sri Lanka concerning Indian territory during earlier decades.
Economically, India transformed dramatically. Once one of the wealthiest nations, it slipped to the 11th largest economy by 2014, with nearly 30% of its population living in poverty. The current administration under Narendra Modi has significantly reduced this figure, with poverty now around 4% in just a decade. Access to universal healthcare has improved as well.
Ravi suggested that unity among India’s diverse population rests on a deeper understanding of “rashtra,” or nationhood, rather than solely on the concept of the nation-state. He criticized current legal interpretations that focus primarily on Western ideals. This gap in understanding, he argues, has hindered India’s unity and progress.
He concluded by stating that the future of India depends on how its people view themselves—as part of a family, a “rashtra.” The seminar included speakers from various cultural and social organizations, stressing the importance of cultural unity.
