Hotel Haya showcased its Cubano Croissant, swapping Cuban bread for a flaky pastry. This bold move won over both judges and the crowd, earning it top honors. Station House BBQ also made waves with its smoky options, including a sweet guava barbecue sauce that became a favorite in the People’s Choice category.
Soul De Cuba offered a more traditional version that many fans appreciated. The event was not just about sandwiches; it also featured rum tastings, flan samples, and even cigar-rolling demonstrations from JC Newman Cigar Co. The addition of vendors like Banquet61, which served award-winning flan, delighted many attendees.
Another crowd-pleaser was Habana Café. Its cream cheese flan, created by owner Josefa Gonzalez-Hastings, was a standout. She even shared her cookbook, which features a classic Cuban sandwich recipe that highlights the traditional way to layer ingredients.
According to a recent survey by Food & Wine, 67% of people enjoy trying new versions of classic dishes, showing a growing trend toward culinary innovation. Events like this celebrate that spirit.
This year’s event not only brought together different flavors but also highlighted the cultural roots of the Cuban sandwich and showcased the increasingly popular movement of reinterpreting beloved foods. The combination of tradition and creativity at the fun gathering made it clear that culinary boundaries are meant to be pushed.
