“Indulge Your Taste Buds: Experience the Ultimate Jackson Block Party Feast!”

Michael Jackson may not be famous for a specific dish like Elvis’s peanut butter and banana burger, but he had a soft spot for French toast.

Recently, the spotlight has shifted to Gary, Indiana, where Joslyn Kelly’s J’s Breakfast Club is transforming into J’s Supper Club, offering dinner for the first time. This change coincides with the 2300 Jackson Street Block Party, which pays homage to the Jackson family and Gary’s vibrant food scene.

The block party will showcase local vendors, highlighting the city’s culinary diversity. As Courtney Franklin, the manager, puts it, “There’s some soul food here, mixed with people’s unique twists.” Many of the vendors featured primarily operate at events in Gary, making them hidden treasures within the community.

At this year’s festival, the excitement was palpable. Attendees expressed pride in Gary’s awakening spirit. Many shared that despite the challenges the city has faced, the sense of community is strong and growing. Events like the block party create opportunities for locals to support one another.

Food vendors at the event offered a taste of Gary’s creativity. For example, Ollie’s Pastas served up chicken and turkey dishes, while Barb’s Bakerrant Creations, a family-run mobile bakery, presented everything from gourmet cakes to hearty soul food.

Reflecting on the changes, Kelly mentioned mixed feelings about the demolitions of downtown buildings. Many residents feel deep connections to these places. While they recognize their condition, they cherish the memories created there, especially from Gary’s bustling past in the 1950s and ’60s.

Yet, there’s an optimistic outlook for the future. Kelly described Gary as an “open canvas,” with residents ready to shape its destiny. The team at Barb’s Bakerrant noted the improvement in community spirit, emphasizing that they’ve witnessed significant positive changes over the years.

So, as Gary hosts events like the block party, there’s a palpable feeling of hope and resilience. Residents are eager to embrace and celebrate their culture, showing that great things are on the horizon for this city.
