Colombo: The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Nireekshak recently docked in Sri Lanka for a training visit and operational turnaround. This visit aims to strengthen the maritime ties between India and Sri Lanka. On Tuesday, the Sri Lankan Navy welcomed the ship with traditional naval ceremonies at the port of Colombo.
Under the command of Commander Sailesh Kumar Tyagi, INS Nireekshak, which specializes in diving support and submarine rescue, plans to conduct training alongside Sri Lankan diving professionals. According to the Sri Lankan Navy, the crew will also take part in various activities organized by their hosts and explore local tourist spots.
This collaboration is more than just a training exercise; it reflects a growing bond between the two nations. The Indian High Commission in Colombo shared details on social media, highlighting the importance of this maritime partnership.
INS Nireekshak is preparing for the 4th India-Sri Lanka joint diving exercise (DIVEX 2026), scheduled for April 21-27, which focuses on specialized diving operations. The objective is to promote teamwork and share best practices between the two navies.
According to recent reports from the Indian Ministry of Defence, the week-long engagement marks ongoing efforts to reinforce Indo-Sri Lankan maritime cooperation. Such collaborations are essential, especially in today’s world where regional stability is a priority.
Moreover, as part of India’s humanitarian outreach, the ship plans to deliver two BHISM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri) cubes to Sri Lankan authorities, part of the “Aarogya Maitri” initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare services.
Additionally, the Indian Navy will provide 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to the Sri Lankan Navy, reflecting a commitment to bolster local maritime security.
The DIVEX exercise not only exemplifies the deep-rooted maritime relationship between India and Sri Lanka but also emphasizes regional security in the Indian Ocean. This partnership aligns with the MAHASAGAR vision, promoting stability and growth across the region.
In today’s volatile geopolitics, maritime cooperation stands as a crucial pillar for both nations. As global security dynamics shift, shared maritime interests can significantly contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
