Meta recently made significant job cuts, impacting around 5% of its workforce. Internal documents obtained by Business Insider reveal which teams faced the most layoffs.
Last week, Meta cut over 3,100 jobs. The data indicates that the teams led by Tom Alison, Facebook’s head, were the most affected, losing 335 employees. The Horizon team, which focuses on virtual reality, saw 244 layoffs, part of the Reality Labs division overseen by Vishal Shah.
Another department hit hard was the devices team under Carmine Arabia, with 195 positions cut in various roles, including business analytics and engineering. Lori Goler’s former group, responsible for administrative tasks, faced 189 layoffs.
In addition, 186 jobs related to data center strategies, reporting to Rachel Peterson, were eliminated. The team under Peng Fan focused on monetization tools lost 180 roles, mainly software engineers. Fan mentioned plans to increase hiring for machine learning engineers in the upcoming months.
Alex Himel’s group, focused on augmented reality, also experienced cuts, losing 141 employees. This restructuring is part of a larger shift within Meta towards its Reality Labs unit, which has been identified as critical for the company’s future.
In a memo, Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, stated that 2025 is a pivotal year for their metaverse initiatives, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating the metaverse’s potential.
