Instagram Edits Soars to Over 7 Million Downloads in Launch Week, Outpacing CapCut | TechCrunch

Instagram Edits, a new app from Meta, has made quite a splash since its launch. In its first two days, it was downloaded about 702,900 times on iOS devices—37 times more than ByteDance’s CapCut during its initial launch. This data comes from Appfigures.

By now, Edits has reached a total of 7.1 million downloads—1.2 million on iOS and 5.9 million on Android. In contrast, CapCut managed just 83,500 downloads during its first three days, even considering CapCut was launched in only half of the global markets. Edits dominates the charts significantly.

In the U.S. alone, Edits was downloaded 381,000 times in just three days while CapCut only saw 3,400 downloads. This means Edits had an astounding 112 times larger launch in the U.S.

This rapid growth helped Edits rank high in the App Store, which can further boost its visibility and downloads. Meta’s powerful network clearly supports app launches like this, leveraging its vast user base to enhance new projects.

On its first day, Edits climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. iPhone App Store’s charts, including both overall apps and non-game apps. While it dropped to No. 2 on the second day and No. 3 by the next, the performance still puts Edits ahead of CapCut, which was at No. 14 overall in the same timeframe.

However, Edits needs to work harder to match CapCut’s user base. Launched in April 2020, CapCut has been downloaded 1.22 billion times globally (excluding China), making it a giant in the video editing space.

User reactions to Edits have been mixed. In her newsletter, social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman notes that some users love the app’s simple interface, built-in analytics, and high-quality video support. Others feel it lacks essential features, like templates and various transition effects, which CapCut offers.

Looking ahead, Edits might still catch up to CapCut, especially if it continues to add valuable features. There’s also the possibility of a premium tier or ads being introduced in the future.

As the app landscape evolves, Edits shows that even established platforms can shake things up. The competition between these two video editing apps reflects a greater trend in social media, where ease of use and powerful features drive user engagement. According to recent studies, video content is expected to account for 82% of all online traffic by 2025, underscoring the importance of tools like these.

For those exploring video creation, Edits is already making waves, but time will tell how it holds up against established players like CapCut in the long run.
