Iran: A Regional Leader in Health Systems and Universal Health Coverage, Says WHO Official

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently praised Iran for its impressive healthcare achievements. Hanan Balkhi, the director of the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO), highlighted Iran’s progress in expanding healthcare access, particularly in rural areas. He noted high vaccination rates and a significant reduction in maternal and newborn mortality as key successes.

During a meeting with Iran’s Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Balkhi acknowledged Iran as a role model in the region for its commitment to universal health coverage. This progress is especially noteworthy given Iran’s efforts to provide healthcare to millions of refugees.

Balkhi emphasized the importance of regulatory improvements in Iran’s pharmaceutical sector, which could enhance the country’s ability to export health products globally. This effort aligns with WHO’s goals of strengthening global health security.

In October 2024, Balkhi expressed interest in deepening cooperation with Iran. He praised Iran’s healthcare capabilities during a previous visit, highlighting its potential as a leader in health within the region.

In a letter to a national seminar, President Masoud Pezeshkian labeled Iran’s healthcare system as a global model, particularly for its primary care services. He credited healthcare workers for their dedication in providing crucial services like vaccinations and prenatal care, leading to increased life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates. The government’s ongoing health programs, including universal health coverage and family physician initiatives, aim to deliver continuous care to millions.
