GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — An Iranian warship, the IRIS Dena, sank after being struck by a U.S. submarine near Sri Lanka. This incident has raised questions about maritime safety in the Indian Ocean, where India plays a significant naval role.
On Wednesday, Sri Lanka’s navy recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 sailors from the sinking ship. The situation was alarming, marking one of the few times a ship has been torpedoed since World War II. When Sri Lanka’s navy responded to a distress signal, they found only patches of oil and sailors in the water. The survivors were taken to a hospital in Galle.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that the sinking highlights the extending conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. He referred to the IRIS Dena as a “prize ship.” Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to weaken Iran’s navy.

Opposition leaders expressed concern over the government’s silence regarding the sinking. Rahul Gandhi, a prominent opposition figure, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not addressing an event so close to Indian waters. Former diplomat Kanwal Sibal noted that while India wasn’t responsible for the strike, it has a moral obligation given the ship was in those waters due to Indian invitation.
In another development, Sri Lanka’s media minister announced that another Iranian ship, the IRIS Bushehr, had entered Sri Lanka’s exclusive economic zone. The government is working to ensure regional stability while providing aid to the crew, as 208 sailors were transferred to safety.
