In the past month, weather models have hinted at a potentially historic El Niño, possibly the strongest we’ve seen. This phenomenon, dubbed a “super El Niño” or even “Godzilla El Niño,” could bring extreme weather: droughts in some areas and floods in others. Experts warn it could lead to the hottest year on record too.

What is El Niño?
El Niño is a natural climate cycle that disrupts global weather patterns. Last time El Niño struck, in 2024, it briefly pushed global temperatures past the Paris Agreement limit of 1.5°C. Experts are concerned that, if the super El Niño develops, 2027 could break record highs once more.
Future of Super El Niño Events
While central Pacific temperatures are rising, climate change also raises the averages we compare them to. This might mean we won’t see an increase in the number or strength of El Niño events, despite climate changes affecting the weather. Studies have shown that El Niño and its cooler counterpart, La Niña, have become more frequent in the last half-century. A recent study suggests climate change may amplify these temperature swings by 10%, but the data is still limited.
“Will El Niño change under climate change? It probably will,” says Stockdale. The critical takeaway is that global warming intensifies El Niño’s impacts. Higher global temperatures lead to more moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in more extreme weather events like droughts and floods.
As we navigate uncertain climate futures, understanding and monitoring El Niño’s potential developments will be vital for mitigating its impacts globally.
