During the teenage years, many changes happen in the body. These changes can be confusing. Recently, a 15-year-old boy asked on Quora, “After I urinate, some clear, bad-smelling liquid comes out. Is this normal?” This question struck a chord with many young people searching for answers about their bodies.
To clarify these concerns, we spoke with Dr. Dhruva G Prakash, a Consultant Urologist at DHEE Hospitals.
Is Clear, Foul-Smelling Discharge Normal?
Dr. Prakash explains that a clear or slightly whitish discharge can occur for normal reasons. It may come from residual semen or pre-ejaculate fluid. However, if the discharge smells foul or comes with burning, itching, or pain, it might be a sign of an infection. Ignoring these symptoms isn’t advisable, especially if they keep coming back.
What Causes This Discharge?
Several factors could be at play. Common culprits include urinary tract infections, poor hygiene, and urethritis (inflammation of the urethra). Sexually active teens should also be mindful of sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea or chlamydia. Interestingly, dehydration can also cause concentrated urine that smells bad, though it usually doesn’t lead to discharge. Identifying the exact cause often requires medical evaluation.
When to Seek Help?
If discharge is persistent, smells bad, or comes with other symptoms like pain or blood in urine, it’s time to see a doctor. Dr. Prakash typically recommends tests like urine culture and ultrasound to pinpoint the issue early on. This can prevent potential complications down the line.
Do Hormones Play a Role?
Hormonal changes during puberty can lead to secretions from glands around the penis. These fluids are mostly clear and odourless and are not usually tied to discomfort. In contrast, infection-related discharge tends to be thicker and has a foul smell. If there’s ever uncertainty, Dr. Prakash advises consulting a doctor.
Tips for Better Hygiene
Maintaining good hygiene is key. Dr. Prakash suggests washing the genital area daily with mild soap and water, wearing clean cotton underwear, and staying well-hydrated. It’s essential to avoid harsh soaps that can irritate the skin. Teenagers who are sexually active should always practice safe sex and consider regular medical check-ups.
Understanding the Bigger Picture
Statistics show that sexual health awareness among teens has increased. According to a survey by the American Sexual Health Association, about 72% of teenagers say they feel more informed about sexually transmitted infections than their parents were at the same age. This shift has led to more openness around discussions on topics like these.
By being proactive about their health and seeking reliable information, teenagers can navigate these complex changes with more confidence and less anxiety.
