In July, astronomers spotted a mysterious object called 3I-ATLAS, the third known interstellar object to visit our solar system. Many believe it’s a comet, but some experts, like Avi Loeb from Harvard, think it might be something more unusual—perhaps a craft from an alien civilization. Though most of Loeb’s peers doubt this idea, he remains undeterred.
Currently, 3I-ATLAS is hidden behind the Sun, making it invisible to us for about a month. Recently, images from the Nordic Optical Telescope in the Canary Islands showed an intriguing change: the debris tail of the comet, typically swept behind it, seems to be directed toward the Sun. This phenomenon is called an “anti-tail,” something seen in other comets throughout history.
Typically, an anti-tail is just an optical illusion caused by our vantage point in relation to the Sun. As a comet approaches, the sunlight affects how we perceive its tail. However, Loeb proposes a different explanation. He suggests that what we see might indicate an alien craft using a form of propulsion to navigate, slowing down to explore our solar system. He argues that, if true, this observation could hint at advanced technology—a “technosignature” exhibiting controlled movement.
It’s essential to remember that we won’t know the truth until the object reappears around December 19. At that point, scientists will be able to determine if it’s still moving through space as expected or if its path has changed significantly.
