The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) has welcomed the government’s SOP for the reintroduction of standardised edible oil pack sizes, calling it an important step toward improving transparency in the edible oil retail market.
Following engagement by IVPA and other industry associations, the government has introduced a process for bringing back standardised pack sizes. IVPA said the policy change will mark the end of fractional and non-standard retail packaging, creating a more transparent marketplace for buyers.
The industry body said the move will put a lid on predatory packaging practices and help consumers compare prices more confidently. The unified advocacy campaign was led by IVPA along with other associations.
Mr. Sudhakar Desai, President of the Indian Vegetable oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), stated, “We thank the government for the consultative approach to solve this long-pending issue confronting the industry. While the non-standardisation was done to give freedom to the industry, however, for over three years, this practice has distorted the market leading to proliferation of such packs creating widespread confusion in the marketplace.”
IVPA is a five-decade-old apex trade body representing India’s edible oil and oilseed value chain. It serves as a platform for producers, refiners and traders, and works with government, industry stakeholders and international organisations on policy, innovation, fair trade and consumer welfare.
